Step-by-Step Guide to Performing Hajj Rituals
Making Niyyah and Entering Ihram
Entering Ihram is the first thing pilgrims have to perform before getting on the journey towards Makkah. Ihram is basically a state of purity and purpose that distinguishes your journey from routine trips. So, make Niyyah of Hajj with sincerity and ask Allah for help throughout the pilgrimage and accept all your efforts. In this state, men wear two seamless white sheets around the waist and shoulders. While women can wear any modest clothes or abaya to cover their whole body except their face and hands.
In the state of Ihram, do not:
- Cut your hair or nails
- Use any perfume or scented products
- Hunt any animals
- Argue with other people
Also, recite Talbiyah until you start Tawaf of the Kaabah.
Performing Tawaf
Tawaf is an important ritual of Hajj as it's a part of Umrah as well. Hajar al-Aswad is a starting point to begin circling. So, complete seven circuits around the Kaabah in anticlockwise direction in a way that Kaabah remains on your left side. Start your every circuit with Istilam which is a practice of raising your right hand towards Hajar al-Aswad and saying Allah O Akbar. It counts as eight Istilam in one Tawaf.
After completing seven circuits, find a place in Muzaf to offer two Rak'ah Salah.
Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah
Sa'i is another Hajj ritual that includes seven trips to and from Safa and Marwa. Start your walk at Safa hill and walk to Marwa while making Dua and Dhikr. It counts as a first trip. After that, walk back to Safa for a second trip and so on until you complete seven trips ending at Marwa hill. During Sa'i, women have to walk normally while men have to run lightly under the green lights.
Staying in Mina (8th Dhul Hijjah)
8th of Dhul Hijjah is a time to travel to Mina which is a place near Makkah. Spending a night of Youm e Arafat at Mina is a ritual of Hajj. During this stay, pray five daily prayers as usual and get ready for the most important day of Hajj.
Day of Arafat (9th Dhul Hijjah)
The 9th of Dhul Hijjah is the most important day of Hajj. So, leave Mina after sunrise towards the plain of Arafat which is 20 kilometers from Makkah. Pilgrims have to reach Arafat before noon prayer.
At Arafat, listen to Khutba of Hajj. From noon to sunset, it's time to ask forgiveness and blessings of Allah. Make personal prayers and remember Allah throughout the day. Leave Arafat after sunset to reach Muzdalifah. Pray Maghrib and Isha prayers together there. Also, collect some small stones for the next day ritual.
Stoning the Devil (10th Dhul Hijjah)
The 10th of Dhul Hijjah is a day to travel back to Mina. Mina has three stone pillars called Jamarat. Throw seven stones at the largest pillar one by one. Say "Allah O Akbar" while throwing stones. This ritual revives the way Prophet Ibrahim threw stones at Satan. You must complete this stoning between sunrise and sunset.
Animal Sacrifice
On the same day after stoning, sacrifice an animal which can be a sheep, goat, cow, or camel. You can also pay someone else to do the sacrifice on your behalf. This ritual is also a Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim when he was willing to sacrifice his son.
Cutting Hair
Cut your hair after sacrifice which is the end of the state of Ihram. Men have to either shave their head completely or cut hair short. Women only cut a small piece of hair about one inch long. You can now wear your normal clothes again. You can also use perfume and other scented products.
Tawaf al-Ifadah
Return to Mecca and perform another Tawaf around the Kaaba. Tawaf al-Ifadah is the same as you did earlier. Then, perform Sa'i between Safa and Marwah. This way, you will complete all the main rituals of Hajj. You have now fulfilled your religious duty.
Remaining Days in Mina
Spend the 11th, 12th and sometimes 13th days of Dhul Hijjah back in Mina. Each day you have to stone all three pillars at Jamarat. You can either leave after the 12th day or stay until the 13th day.
Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada)
Before leaving Mecca for good, perform your final Tawaf around the Kaaba. This is called Tawaf al-Wada which means farewell Tawaf. Walk around the Kaaba seven times and make your final prayers. This is your way of saying goodbye to the Holy Kaaba before returning home.
